Co-organized and produced by WKCDA and Motion 27, Broadway's most rocking musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, will return to Hong Kong as Rock Barbie from May 15 to 31, 2026, with 13 performances at the Xiqu Centre Freespace in the West Kowloon Cultural District.
Directed by cross-media theatre director Lam Chun-ho and featuring renowned local musical theatre actor Cheng Chun-chi in the lead role, the Hong Kong version of Rock Barbie blends cross-dressing art with exuberant rock music and other elements of popular culture. After its well-received premiere in 2025, the musical is back this year with an excellent local cast and crew—Cheng reprises his role as Hedwig, joined by local singer-songwriter Ray Chan (J.Arie) as Yitzhak, Hedwig's 'husband'. Get ready for a night of rocking entertainment filled with love and heartbreak, extravagant visuals, heartfelt emotions, and boundless energy.
Due to enthusiastic response during the public sale on March 16, 2026, WKCDA and Motion 27 have decided to add four more performances on May 27, 29, 30 and 31, for a total of 13 shows. Tickets for the additional performances will go on sale on April 22, 2026 at 10am via the ticketing platform POPTICKET.
Hong Kong version of Rock Barbie blends cross-dressing, music, dance and other elements of popular culture to reinvent the Broadway classic for a unique theatrical experience.
Created by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, Hedwig and the Angry Inch premiered off-Broadway in New York in 1998 and is considered a landmark in contemporary musical theatre history. The play has since been translated into multiple languages and staged around the world, sweeping numerous drama awards in 2014, including the 'American Drama Oscars', the Tony Awards.
The Hong Kong version of Rock Barbie premiered at the Freespace in West Kowloon in 2025, marking the first-ever Cantonese translation of the musical. While preserving the essence of the original, the production features new arrangements and localized lyrics to resonate emotionally with local audiences. Moreover, the creative team crafted a groundbreaking, carnival-like experience, including a DJ music and dance party, and a themed pop-up bar, breaking down traditional boundaries between performers and audiences to offer a fresh and exhilarating theatrical experience that brings the atmosphere to a fever pitch.
The Hong Kong version received critical acclaim and earned five nominations at the 34th Hong Kong Drama Awards in early 2026, including Best Lyricist, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, solidifying its recognition in the local industry.
Rock Barbie tells the story of Hedwig, an East German rock singer who undergoes a sex change operation for love, but it fails. After enduring multiple betrayals, Hedwig forms the band The Angry Inch and embarks on a wild and passionate tour, using extravagant cross-dressing as a shield and songs of joy and anger as a weapon, to exact revenge on the stage in a dazzling display of defiance.
Local singer-songwriter Ray Chan (J.Arie) joins the cast, taking on the challenge of cross-dressing to play Yitzhak
The Hong Kong version of Rock Barbie assembles a superb local creative team. Lam Chun-ho, active in cross-media performing arts, serves as the creative director, director and choreographer. He won the Best Choreography award at the '2024 Beijing Musical Theatre Festival' for his original musical Tai Chung King, and received the 'Hong Kong Dance Awards 2025' for Living UP/Tongue Twister in the Outstanding Medium Venue Dance Production category. Cheng Chun-chi, one of Hong Kong's hottest musical theatre actors in recent years, translates the script and lyrics while playing the lead role of Hedwig, infusing the production with nuanced and multidimensional stage language through his wealth of experience from over 90 productions in the past decade.
This year's rerun welcomes the exciting addition of Ray Chan (J.Arie), a singer-songwriter who debuted in 2013 and has since garnered numerous awards at Hong Kong's major media music award ceremonies. Her first musical theatre performance in The Addams Family at the Hong Kong Musical Festival 2026 was impressive, and her upcoming cross-dressing role as Yitzhak, Hedwig's 'husband', is highly anticipated.
On the music front, veteran musician Li Dut-fan returns as music director, joined by the Hong Kong-exclusive The Angry Inch band, featuring HeiHei (Ng Cheuk-sai), the first-season champion of ViuTV's The Drummer, on drums; K Tsang on keyboards; mue on bass; and SongChi (Sochi) on guitar.
The powerful creative and performing team of Rock Barbie will spare no effort to present Hedwig's rebellious yet sincere, laughter- and tear-filled world to the audience.
